Friends of Boggs Mountain participated this year in Middletown High School’s “Reach-A-Dream” scholarship program. The program is community funded to provide graduating seniors who are moving on to higher education, trade schools, or entering the armed forces with scholarship awards. Each applicant goes through a rigorous application and interview process. This year’s awards ceremony was held on May 29, 2025 at Middletown High School. Friends of Boggs Mountain proudly awarded this year’s scholarship to Shaylee Rudy. Shaylee with a 4.0+ GPA excelled in all academic areas and held leadership roles in the many clubs and activities she participated in. She is the recipient of many awards and as an ardent volunteer has logged many community service hours. Shaylee will be attending Willamette University in Oregon this fall. We congratulate her on a job well done and wish her much success in the future.

Due to increasing fire activity and augmentation of firefighting resources, the CAL FIRE forest manager has asked that all forest visitors avoid any activity that could be a source of sparks or any form of ignition. FOBM will  postpone any trail work activities on Boggs Mountain DSF until we have been advised by CALFire it is safe to resume.

Mark your calendar and plan to join us for the 5th annual Cobb Mountain Blackberry Cobbler Festival on Saturday August 23. Once again the festival is being held at Belmont Pines, 16451 Golf Rd in Cobb. Friends of Boggs Mountain will have an information booth and will be selling FOBM merchandise as well as sponsoring a raffle for a $100 REI gift card. All proceeds go toward trail restoration, maintenance and educational programs designed to enhance the visitors’ experience to Boggs Mountain State Demonstration Forest. Hope to see you there!

Saturday June 28 will be our next trail work day. Depending on the size of our group we may split up into teams and tackle several different projects. Game trail still needs finish work, Grizzly will require some bushwacking and there is plenty of regular maintenance, such as cutting back brush that is encroaching on trails. So if you would like to spend the morning working off some of the prior week’s stress please consider joining us. For several years I have been concerned about the deterioration of the Boggs Ridge Nature Trail sign at the Cobb Mountain Elementary School. This is at the location of the Friends of Boggs Mountain (FOBM) Interpretive Trail developed in 2015. The Nature Trail sign was created by Austin Daley as a Eagle Scout project in the Spring/Summer of 2011. 

As the 2020’s rolled around, the sign was badly in need of some attention. I reported this at a Friends of Boggs Mountain meeting and I was hoping I could get an Eagle Scout involved with the restoration or perhaps a Middletown High School Senior would take this on as a Senior Project. None of my attempts nor those of others proved successful.

Thus, at the April FOBM meeting, I threw up my hands in despair and announced I gave up presuming the sign would crumble into a pile of disintegrated wood, but NO! Joe Fusek and Peg Landini responded to my despair and took it upon themselves to restore the sign to its former glory. When I learned they were working on the restoration, I joined in as did David Thiessen. So, what was created by Austin Daley in the Spring/ Summer of 2011 was restored by the impetus of Joe and Peg 14 years later in the Spring of 2025.
